Abstract : This study is aimed at identifying the etiology, clinical presentation and diagnostic modalities of pleural effusion in patients admitted to medical wards at King Abdul Aziz University Hospital, Jeddah. The study included all cases of pleural effusion admitted to the medical ward of the hospital during the peri- od between January 1997 to December 1999. A total of 62 patients were diagnosed to have pleural effu- sion with a mean age of 46 years, with a male to female ratio of 2:1. Dyspnoea, cough and chest pain were the commonest symptoms on presentation. Malignancy and tuberculosis (TB) were the most common etiologies. T.B. was more common in non-Saudis than in Saudis; 77% and 23% respectively. No cause could be found in 10 out of 62 patients (16%) in whom empirical treatment with anti tubercu- losis was started with good response. We found that clinical presentation and etiology of pleural effusion in our study was similar to that re- ported in other developed countries where malignancy and tuberculosis constituted the main causes.
