Abstract : This study was conducted on 36 patients (72 joints) of both sexes and age range between 16 and 38 years, having signs and symptoms related to TMJ. They were divided into two groups. Group I : unilaterally symptomatic TMJ patients and group II : bilaterally symptomatic TMJ patients. The aim of this study was to compare between both TMJs in unilaterally and bilaterally symptomatic pa- tients through a tomographic analysis . Detailed corrected lateral tomography, using Scanora multi- modal system, was performed for every patient for both joints in centric occlusion as well as at max- imal mouth opening positions. To assess the condylar position in relation to the glenoid fossa in centric occlusion and condylar translation at maximal mouth opening as well as joint space pa- rameters, special linear and angular measurements were calculated, recorded, and statisitically an- alyzed. Data analysis revealed that there was no significance of difference between the different tomographic variables measured in both TMJs in bilaterally and unilaterally symptomatic patients. Great care should be directed to the asymptomatic side in patients with unilateral TMJ complain to exclude any joint abnormality.
