Abstract : This research aims at the study of the miraculous wonder of the use of costus in the treatment of pulmonary infection with Aspergillus niger instead of the medical drug Amphotericin B. In this research experiments were conducted using white male rats that were divided into the following groups:G1:This group consisted of the control group of rats which were10 in number.Distilled water was administered to the members of the group throughout the time of the experiment.G2:This group consisted of the animals treated with the fungus suspension. They were 20 in number divided into two subgroups:A subgroup made up of 10 rats that were treated with the fungus suspension at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg of body weight in the form of drops in the nose at the rate of 6 doses every two days for two weeks. Two weeks after the last dose the animals were sacrificed and dissected.A subgroup made up of 10 rats that were treated with the fungus suspension at a dose of 0.4 mg/kg of body weight in the form of drops in the nose at the rate of 6 doses every two days for two weeks. Two weeks after the last dose the animals were sacrificed and dissected.G3:This subgroup is made up of the rats treated with costus alone and was made up of 20 animals treated with costus and divided into two subgroups:A subgroup made up of 10 rats that were treated with costus administered orally at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg of body weight daily for three weeks. The animals were then sacrificed and dissected.A subgroup made up of 10 rats that were treated with costus administered orally at a dose of 0.4 mg/kg of body weight daily for three weeks. The animals were then sacrificed and dissected. This is the infected subgroup which was treated with costus and divided into two subgroups:A subgroup made up of 20 rats that were treated with costus at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg of body weight and was divided into two subgroups:A subgroup made up 10 rats treated with the fungus suspension administered at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg of body weight in the form of drops in the nose at the rate of 6 doses every two days for two weeks then two weeks later treated orally with costus at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg of body weight for 10 days. The animals were then sacrificed and dissected.A subgroup made up 10 rats treated with the fungus suspension administered at a dose of 0.4 mg/kg of body weight in the form of drops in the nose at the rate of 6 doses every two days for two weeks then two weeks later treated orally with costus at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg of body weight for 10 days. The animals were then sacrificed and dissected.A subgroup made up of 20 rats that were treated with costus at a dose of 0.4 mg/kg of body weight and was divided into two subgroups:A subgroup made up of 10 rats treated with the fungus suspension administered at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg of body weight in the form of drops in the nose at the rate of 6doses every two days for two weeks, then two weeks later treated orally with costus at a dose of 0.4 mg/kg of body weight for 10 days. The animals were then sacrificed and dissected.A subgroup made up of 10 rats treated with the fungus suspension administered at a dose of 0.4 mg/kg of body weight in the form of drops in the nose at the rate of 6 doses every two days for two weeks, then two weeks later treated orally with costus at a dose of 0.4 mg/kg of body weight for 10 days. The animals were then sacrificed and dissected.G4:This group was made up of 20 rats treated with Amphotericin B which was divided into two groups:A subgroup made up of 10 rats that were treated with the fungus suspension administered at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg of body weight in the form of drops in the nose at the rate of 6 doses every two days for two weeks, then two weeks later treated with intravenous Amphotericin Bat a dose of 0.2 mg/kg of body weight. The animals were then sacrificed and dissected.A subgroup made up of 10 rats that were treated with the fungus suspension administered at a dose of 0.4 mg/kg of body weight in the form of drops in the nose at the rate of 6 doses every two days for two weeks then two weeks later treated with intravenous Amphotericin B at a dose of 0.2 mg/kg of body weight. The animals were then sacrificed and dissected. The most prominent findings of the research were as follows: Histopathological and ultrastructural changes appeared in the rats infected with the suspension of the fungus in the case of both doses in the form of malformations in most of the lung tissues. The study of histological and ultrastructural sections showed an obvious positive effect of costus in the rats infected with the suspension of the fungus in the case of both doses. The histological and ultrastructural defects continued to appear in most of the lung tissues treated with the drug.
