Abstract : AL-Hada Road is located in the west part of Saudi Arabia about 19 km west of Taif City and 150 Km from Jeddah City to the west. The studied area lies between latitudes 21° 18' 52" north and 21° 21'15" north and longitudes 40° 11' 22" east and 40° 16' 15"east. The purpose of the thesis is to evaluate the stability condition of the debris cone deposits that accumulated during rainy times. These deposits are crossing the escarpment along the existing new road of AL-Hada escarpment. The studied area consists of plutonic rocks exposed along the escarpment road , and they comprise mainly three rock types : diorite , granodiorite , and Monzogranite. The most dominant geological structural features to the studied area are joints and minor faults. From engineering geological point of view, the studied rock units along the Road have been grouped into six zones according to the description of rock masses for engineering purposes system by the Geological Society of London (1977). The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system proposed by Bieniawaski, (1989) was used for classifying the rock masses for engineering purposes. The results indicate that the studied rock masses along the road were classified into three classes ranging from Good quality rock masses (class II), Good to Fair quality rock masses (class II-III) to Fair quality rock masses (class III). The stability assessment of the cuts and slopes was done using different techniques including: a) Slope Mass Rating System (SMR) (Romana, 1993) to evaluate the stability of the rock slopes, and b) Rockfall Hazard Rating System (RHRS) (Pierson and others 1990) to determine the raveling failure slopes that have a high degree of hazard to the road. The results of the stability analysis of the road cuts along the Al Hada descent indicate that the slopes fall into four categories based on the prescribed SMR values. These are unstable, partially stable, stable, and completely stable slopes. The hazard classes using the Rockfall Hazard Rating system (RHRS) are of low to medium hazards. Seventeen debris locations were analyzed and measured. All these locations are in unstable conditions especially during rainy time and needed immediate removal and cleaning. Redesign of the route is one of the permanent solutions beside the construction of drainage bridges for isolated soils and fragmental blocks. Shotcrete of the cleaned faces are required after removing the debris materials.
