Abstract : This dissertation’s topic is the study of the academic information system currently in use at King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Saudi Arabia, for the purpose of improving it so that it meets the requirements of its users and those of the Ministry of Higher Education, as set in the Foundation stage of the Yesser program. The objectives of this dissertation are the following: identifying the structure of the existing system at KAU, ODUS Plus; identify the needs of the users of ODUS Plus and how they are currently met; identify main strengths and weaknesses of ODUS Plus; develop a model for improving ODUS Plus by addressing all issues previously identified. To achieve the objectives of this dissertation, the overall methodology is that of the scientific method. Within this, a literature review is used to gain insight from existing work related to this dissertation and to set this work within its larger background. Additional methodologies used include the survey, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, as well as flow chart analysis and data flow diagrams analysis. The work done for this dissertation corresponds to the following plan: first, a literature review is performed focusing on the information systems field and existing studies with topics that are related to that of this dissertation; second, a review of ODUS Plus is performed, using data mining, flow charts, data flow diagrams and SWOT analysis; third, a field study at KAU is performed, by means of a survey containing questionnaires for all types of users of ODUS Plus; fourth, areas of improvement are identified by combining the results of all previous steps and a full model for improving the system is designed, presented and discussed, addressing all the issues. The key results of this dissertation include the description of the current structure of ODUS Plus by means of flow charts and data flow diagrams, as well as the list of current issues and the concrete model that addresses those issues. The main issues identified are related to performance issues (non-responsiveness and delays), user support issues (non-intuitive and difficult to use interface, lack of focus on users’ goals, lack of adequate support for users) and structure issues (unbalanced hierarchical organization of services and poor data flow through the system). The concrete model proposed addresses those issues by providing an improved structure for the system to improve performance and several innovative concepts to offer better support for users and a more user-friendly interface that adapts to users’ needs and supports their goals. Overall, this dissertation offers both insights into the current state of the academic information system currently in use at KAU and a concrete way of improving it to meet the requirements of its users as well as those of the Ministry of Higher Education.
