Abstract : Recently, the development and adoption of a national code and the experienced of seismic activity at several regions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia require the detailed consideration of seismic loads in the design of all buildings. Major part of residential buildings were designed for gravity loading only and poorly detailed to accommodate lateral loads. This research focused on the seismic evaluation of an existing typical residential building that was assumed to be located in different regions (Makkah, Jeddah, Gizan and Haql). This was accomplished by conducting equivalent static analysis to check the strength performance of building according to SBC-301. Then pushover analysis and nonlinear time history analysis were carried out to study inelastic performance of the building. The Outcome of this research showed that each of the methods has different results. The equivalent static load analysis, which has been used by the most of structural engineers, is still the most preferable method because it is simple in computational point of view. In this approach, the design base shear is derived by dividing the elastic base shear demand by response modification factor, R. The evaluation can be done by comparing the nominal forces capacity of the element by the ultimate forces. The results of static load analysis are close to nonlinear time history analysis, which is a more rational approach. On the other hand, pushover analysis is a simple way to investigate nonlinear behavior of the building. Pushover analysis gives an understanding into nonlinear behavior, which is the expected behavior of structure subjected to moderate dynamic loading. The evaluation produces failure mechanism of the building so that it can identify weak elements. The results obtained showed that pushover analysis is less conservative than the two other methods. It must be emphasized that pushover analysis is an approximate method that may not accurately represent dynamic response.
