Abstract : The study deals with the issue of grammatical rules approved and/or disapproved by Al-Ashmouni in his Manar Al-Huda fi Bayan Al-Wakfi wa Al-Ibtida. It further assesses his commitment to, and divergence from, the specific grammatical rules he had theoretically approved. The objective is to pin down his own applied approach by tackling questions pertaining to wakf (stoppage) and ibtida’ (start) in Surat Al-Bakarah, since it contains the usual grammatical rooting introduced at the beginning of applied studies, along with a great number of varied grammatical categories. The researcher adopts a comparative methodological approach that is at once descriptive and analytical. It pays equal attention to grammatical rooting and grammatical creation and devising within an overall study plan beginning with an introduction to Al-Ashmouni himself and to his rich scholarship and academic heritage. It also defines what is meant by the grammatical standard and outlines its paramount significance and value. Subsequently, the three sections of the first chapter trace the impact of the grammatical standard on stoppage, depending for their categorizations on the grammatical position of the word or sentence where stoppage occurs. The second chapter highlights the impact of the grammatical standard on meaning, opting for the strong side of stoppage and rejecting its weak side, whilst preventing whatever leads to corrupting the meaning or the impressive grammatical workmanship. Finally, in the third chapter, the researcher examines the way Al-Ashmounie has dealt with opinions different from his own, systematically testing the stability and validity of his linguistic standards. In the conclusion, the researcher defines the scholastic framework produced by Al-Ashmouni’s grammatical standard, and describes the mechanism through which he deals with various linguistic issues. The researcher recommends that more attention is paid to applied grammatical studies, based on books of Qur’anic recitations and the insightful guidelines they offer, and on specialized start and stoppage books. He suggests a number of research topics with different start and stoppage points according to different readings, yielding different grammatical and semantic impacts, different grammatical justifications outlined in start and stoppage books, and different opinions and endeavors by start and stoppage linguists.
