Abstract : Nowadays, the current trend is to integrate Wi-Fi with LTE networks to meet the growing demand for huge amounts of data traffic and ubiquitous coverage. Integrating the two networks will make the best use of the advantages of both technologies and eliminate their stand-alone defects. However, this integration of heterogeneous networks will lead to heterogeneities in access technologies, network protocols, and service demands. Seamless mobility between networks and providing the required quality of service (QoS) for all users is one of the most challenging issues of LTE–Wi-Fi integration. Several studies reported in the literature have addressed the problems of integration and vertical handover (VHO) between the two types of networks. However, none of these approaches provide mobile terminals (MTs) with the required QoS without adding new entities or increasing signaling costs. Adding new entities increases the cost of integration while increases signaling costs may cause a negative effect on the network infrastructure and MT battery consumption. We propose an approach to provide MTs with the required QoS while executing VHO seamlessly Three main traffic classes are considered: conversational, streaming, and background. QoS is supported by using analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and by modifying mobile IP (MIP) agent advertisement message to carry QoS scores for each base station (BS). A cross-layer approach is used to execute VHO. The Mobile IP (MIP) messages are used for location management whereas mobile Stream Control Transmission Protocol (mSCTP) messages are used for handover management from the current BS to the target BS. Detailed analysis and evaluation of the proposed solution is presented. The numerical results show that the proposed approach can support QoS and reduce Wi-Fi blocking probability. Our proposed approach outperforms existing solutions in terms of delay and signaling costs, and also provides MTs with the required QoS without adding any new entity to the existing infrastructure and without increasing VHO signaling costs.
