The present study aimed to identify the availability of basic elements of building knowledge society at Saudi universities, and the main requirements and the most significant obstacles facing, such transformation. The study population included teaching staff of three universities; King Abdul Aziz University in Jeddah, Taif University, and Islamic University in Madinah. In addition, the study aimed to review the universities’ strategies related to transformation to knowledge society. The researcher used the survey method, and the descriptive method, in order to achieve the study objectives. The researcher developed a questionnaire of two sections: the first included personal data of the study sample individuals, and the second section was intended to collect information related to study hypotheses. 600 questionnaires were distributed to the study sample in the three universities and 432 (72%) were returned. The study findings revealed that the availability of basic elements of building knowledge society in the three universities came in average rate. the teaching staff members in the study population have "neutral" trend towards the availability of basic elements of building knowledge society in King Abdul Aziz University with a rate of (3.14), (2.79) in Taif University, and (2.7) in Islamic University in Madinah out of (5.00). With regard to transformation requirements to knowledge society in the three universities, the trend rate was "neutral" in the three universities; (3.18) in King Abdul Aziz University, (3.00) in Taif University, and (3.06) in Islamic University in Madinah out of (5.00). For the obstacles to transformation to knowledge society in the three universities, the trend rate was "positive"; (3.66) in King Abdul Aziz University, (3.71) in Taif University, and (3.74) in Islamic University in Madinah out of (5.00). There are statistically significant differences in sample trends towards (the availability of basic elements of building to knowledge society and requirements of transformation knowledge society) attributed to the variable: workplace. The study proposed several recommendations including: the senior management must pay attention to drawing a transformation strategy to knowledge society, and allow teaching staff members in the three universities to take part in the decision – making process related to that strategy. In addition, the study recommended establishing research units at each university to be affiliated to knowledge management as well as activating the use of knowledge electronic resources’ by faculty members and students.
