Abstract : Abstract The coastline is defined as the line of contact between land and a body of water. It is recognized as a unique feature on the earths surface, which has a dynamic nature. Coastline mapping and change detection are essential for safe navigation, resource management, environmental protection, and sustainable coastal development and planning. It is easy to define coasltine but difficult to capture because of the change in water level which caused by the tide. Coastline changes are controlled by many factors, such as geology, hydrology, climate, vegetation, human intervention, and, environmental problems, etc. This research focuses on the coastline change rate analysis within the Jeddah governorate of Makkah region in Saudi Arabia. Multitemporal remote sensing data acquired in 1984 and 2013 from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Operational Land Imager (OLI) were used to analyze coastline extraction. Furthermore, histogram threshold is the method was used which is rely on digit number (DN) in order to present gray scale of the image. Detection of coastline changes by satellite images and remote sensing methods have become increasingly important over the recent decades as it assists in developing strategies to protect the natural ecosystem of water bodies. This study incorporates remote sensing (RS) data with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The results of this study show significant changes in a number of areas along the coastline in term of erosion as well as land reclamation in Jeddah. The absence of proper regulation can cause harm to the natural as well as the urban development of the area. This study has also provided some guidelines and regulations for sustainable shoreline urban development. Keyword: Change Detection, GIS, RS, TM, OLI, and DN
