Abstract : In this study, it was aimed to investigate the influence of copper chloride pentahydrate (CuCl2.5H2O) on the modification/optimization of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes for membrane distillation application. Before preparing the dope solutions, the 5H2O was hydrated from CuCl2 at temperature 90 oC for 24 hrs. Later the 18 wt.% PVDF was dissolved in N-Methyl-2 pyrrolidone (NMP), and the concentrations of hydrated CuCl2 in NMP were varied from 0.5 to 3 wt.%. The membranes were tailored as a form of the flat sheet without the introduction of any pore-forming agent, through a non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) technique. The membranes performance was investigated using direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) method, and the membrane was characterized using porosity, contact angle, SEM-EDX, and tensile strength. The results revealed that the porosity of the PVDF membranes increased with the increase in the contents of CuCl2. The addition of a higher amount of CuCl2 amount (2.5-3 wt.%) increased the hydrophobicity of PVDF membranes, and the permeate flux revealed an excellent agreement of PVDF membranes performance. Perhaps the lowest amount of CuCl2 didn't show any significant effect on membrane performance as well as characterization. As an overall the result outcomes show that the PVDF membranes with a higher amount of CuCl2 exhibiting a considerable impact on PVDF contact angles, mechanical properties, and the SEM-EDX results revealed the existence of Cu and chlorine in PVDF structure.
