Abstract : This thesis involves the characterization and the performance evaluation of synchronous generator excitation systems in the transient stability enhancement of power systems. Each and every synchronous machine in power stations is provided with an excitation system for automatic voltage regulation and reactive power control. There are a large number of different kinds of excitations systems from various manufacturers, which are broadly categorized into three major classes: DC Excitation, AC Excitation and Static Excitation systems. These excitation systems from different manufacturers are grouped into specific standard computer simulation models developed by IEEE. In this thesis, it is intended to identify typical models in AC, DC and static excitation systems, compare the performance of these excitation systems in terms of their performance ratio and ceiling voltage following a large disturbance in the power grid. The research is planned to be further extended to investigate the effectiveness of each of these excitation systems in the stability enhancement. Power systems stabilizers (PSS) are the electronic circuits acting through the excitation systems to stabilize power systems against small and slow disturbances continuously occurring in the power grid. In this thesis, the excitation control with attached PSS is also investigated to examine the effectives in the power system stability. The investigations reveal that the IEEE ST2A Excitation System is better than the other types of excitation systems
