Abstract : Applying lenses to selfies has become one of the most demanded features of social media and selfie-taking applications. Cosmetic doctors reported unrealistic expec- tations from patients to look like their filtered photos. The existing studies evaluated the hedonic experience of applications using self-reports which provide subjective data that is not guaranteed to be reliable if used alone. This thesis aims to evalu- ate the hedonic user experience (UX) of lenses automatically by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) emotion recognition to measure users along with self-report and observation. An AI facial expressions recognition model was executed to measure emotion from live data of users’ faces with and without lenses. A new selfie-taking application was developed to collect these live data through four phases. First, the existing UX of selfie-taking and lenses were investigated by using multi-UX sequen- tial research methods. The sequential use of interview and survey methods showed consistent findings. Second, these findings formed the basis for designing a proto- type that went through several levels of fidelity and testing to improve the design. Third, the proposed application was implemented and integrated with customized augmented reality beautifying lenses. Fourth, usability tests were performed to fix errors in the implemented application. Finally, an experiment was conducted to collect selfie videos with and without lenses through the proposed selfie-taking application and to measure self-esteem, lenses usage intensity, and emotions by (AI inference, observation, and self-report). The findings confirmed that emotions changed when taking selfie videos with lenses and without lenses. The absence of lenses after using them had influenced emotion negatively. The partially inconsis- tent results of verbal instruments and non-verbal instruments indicate the need to use more than one instrument from different perspectives in order to complement each other.
