Abstract : Introduction : Urinary catheterization is important procedure done under sterile techniques for patient who have certain criteria as example urinary retention, furthermore, it used with almost patient in intensive care units who have critical cases in other hand, it's also responsible approximately for 40% of nosocomial hospital infections, this infection can threaten the patients' lives especially in immunocompromised patient, the knowledge and attitude of nurses regarding insertion and maintenance of urinary catheter is the key element to reduce the rate of infections among patients which that reducing the financial burden on patient by reducing the period of hospital stay and using of antibiotics medication ,as well as nurses consider the first responsible regarding urinary catheter care. 1. Aim of the study : The aim of current study is to assess the knowledge and attitude of nurses regarding insertion and maintenance of urinary catheters among nurses at King Fahad Specialist Hospital in Tabuk, KSA. To achieve the aim of the study the following objectives were obtained to: 1. To assess the level of knowledge of nursing staff in relation to insertion and maintenance of urinary catheters at King Fahad Specialist Hospital, Tabuk, KSA. 2. To assess the attitude of nursing staff toward insertion and maintenance of urinary catheters at King Fahad Specialist Hospital, Tabuk , KSA. 3. To identify the relationship between knowledge level and attitude regarding insertion and maintenance of urinary catheters among nursing staff at King Fahad Specialist Hospital, Tabuk, KSA. 2. Research questions : 1- What is the level of knowledge of nurses about insertion and maintenance of urinary catheters among nurses at King Fahad Specialist Hospital in Tabuk, KSA? 2- What is the attitude of nurses about insertion and maintenance of urinary catheters at King Fahad Specialist Hospital in Tabuk, KSA? 3- What is the relationship between knowledge and attitude level about insertion and maintenance of urinary catheters among nursing staff at King Fahad Specialist Hospital in Tabuk, KSA? 3. Research design: A descriptive, cross-sectional design will be utilized in this study. 4. Research Setting: The current study was carried out at King Fahad Specialist Hospital (KFSH) in Tabuk City. KFSH. 5. sample size: A convenience sample of 94 registered nurses who attended the medical , surgical and intensive care units in the 3 shifts and were available at time of data collection constituted the study sample. Inclusion criteria 1. Registered nurses employed in the medical, surgical and intensive care units at King Fahad Specialist Hospital, Tabuk City were included in the study. 2. Both genders. 3. All nationalities. 4. Any nurse eager to take part in the study was included in the study. Exclusion criteria 1- student nurses. 2- Nurses in other departments than what was previously mentioned. 6. Study tools: The tools were used to collect the necessary data consist of 3 parts: Part One: The demographical data: It involved nurses' sociodemographic data such as gender, educational level, experience and area of work. Part Two (knowledge survey): 10 items used to assess the knowledge of nurses regarding insertion and maintenance of urinary catheter with one right answer Yes (1) , No (0). Part Three ( attitude survey) : four-point Likert Like Scale consists of 10 items used to assess the attitude of nurses regarding insertion and maintenance of urinary catheter. 7. Data collection process : The data collection process in this study was performed as follows: 1. The necessary approvals from concerned authorities were obtained to conduct the study. 2. The researcher identified nurses who meet the inclusion criteria. 3. The researcher explained to the nurses the purpose of the study. The consent form was given to the study sample. 4. The survey was distributed by researcher to assess the level of knowledge and attitude of nurses regarding insertion and maintenance of urinary catheter which it took 10-20 minutes. 5. Collected data were categorized, tabled and analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science), version 23 software. 8. Results : The current study consisted of a total 94 Registered Nurses who work in medical, surgical wards and intensive care units. Approximately (40%) were male gender and 60% female gender. Regarding the nursing education more than half of them (66%) had a bachelor degree. The large proportion of nurses (38%) were had experience less than or equal 3 years while (33%) had experience in between 4-6 years and (28%) had experience more than 6 years. In addition, (36.2%) were working in intensive care units as well as (33%) worked in medical ward and (30.9) served in surgical ward. The current study showed that large population (50%) of nurses had good level of knowledge. In addition, more than have of nurses (69.1%) were having a positive attitude toward FC insertion and maintenance. This study showed very strong relation between nurses' knowledge and attitude regarding urinary catheter insertion and maintenance (P<0.001). in additional, Pearson correlation was conducted to test the relationship between attitudes and knowledge, The result (r=0.848, p<0.001) indicated that nurses with high level of attitude have high level of knowledge toward insertion and maintenance of urinary catheter. 9. Conclusion: The large population of sample showed good level of knowledge regarding insertion and maintenance of FC while more than have of nurses had positive attitude. In other hand, result showed strong association between nurses' knowledge and attitude regarding urinary catheter insertion and maintenance Hence, the importance of continuous educational program is vital among nurses as it can provide education on UC care. Therefore, this study provides evidence that might be used as a baseline for other healthcare provider in order to enhancement nursing care in term of urinary catheter care. 10. Recommendations: Various recommendation suggested by researcher which based on the study result 1- Protocols and clear policy, procedure in health care settings is helpful point to enhance the knowledge and attitude of nurses regarding proper insertion and maintenance of FC. additionally, its used as guidelines for nurses. 2- Education through training sessions, designed programs, lecture, workshops could improve nurses' knowledge and attitude regarding insertion and maintenance of urinary catheter. 3- Similar studies need to analyses nursing knowledge, attitude and their correlation with larger sample size. 4- Further study needed to evaluate nursing practice regarding FC insertion and maintenance
